Not that many years ago, Kevin Costner starred in a
highly successful movie, “Field of Dreams.”
The central promise of that delightful, memorable movie was…
Build it and they will come.
Well, the rallying cry for the rebirth of Walsenburg’s
97 year old Fox Theatre is
“Restore it and they
will come!” Under the name “Fox on the Rocks,” to
emphasize our southern Rocky Mountain location, an enthusiastic
group of local supporters – The Spanish Peaks Alliance
for Arts and Education -- have all bonded together and envisioned
that soon the storied movie theater on Walsenburg’s Main
Street will be a premier performing arts center on the model
of Raton’s nationally-recognized Schuler Theater.
There is a song made famous by Steve Lawrence and Eydie
Gorme that also comes to mind:
“This Could Be the Start
of Something Big!”
We believe there are thousands of people
within reasonable driving range who would be thrilled to
come to a wonderful venue to be entertained musically
or with stage events or with guest speakers who have messages
to share and only seek an appreciative audience.
And so, The Alliance has been formed as a 501(c)(3) organization
to restore and support a great venue to benefit all of southern
Colorado and northern New Mexico.
It is envisioned that as many as six acts/performances
could be scheduled to perform at Fox on the Rocks in 2010. The
list of potential performers is quite impressive, and it
is The Alliance’s hope that there will be a strong,
positive response to be involved with and to support the
entertainment desires of our southern Colorado and northern
New Mexico communities.
Someone once said, "There is a time and a place for
everything." This is the time. Walsenburg
is the place. And the Fox Theatre is where it
will all happen. Given the opportunity, we believe
that our entire Cuchara Valley community will want to be
involved with something that will be far, far bigger and
better than we could have all dreamed.
Mission statement
The mission of the Spanish Peaks Alliance for Arts and Education
is to enrich the cultural and economic quality of life in Huerfano
County by providing programs and venues for local, regional,
national and international visual, literary and performing
arts. Strategically, the Alliance will serve as an umbrella
organization for the renovation of the Fox Theatre in Walsenburg
as a premier regional performing arts center; for the Spanish
Peaks International Celtic Music Festival; and for other organizations
and projects related to the performing arts. The constituency
of the Alliance consists of all residents of Huerfano County
with special focus upon the children in the Huerfano County
public schools. However, the mission of the Alliance also includes
attracting audiences for performing arts programs from the
entire Front Range of Colorado and from northern New Mexico. |
